I have been involved in Allotmenteering since about 11 years of age when I helped my father on his allotment and in his large greenhouse in Oldham , Lancashire . It was not until 1964 that I rented my first allotment and have been involved in working a plot and managing allotments ever since. For many years I kept bees on my allotment until the effects of bee-stings gained over 20 or so years made it advisable to call it a day and concentrate on non stinging vegetables.
I retired in 2002 after serving nearly 40 years in Local Government, and allotment sites both large and small came under my departments control for most of that time. I became a Life Member of the National Society of Allotment & Leisure Gardeners in July 1979 and regularly attended the National Conference. I have been Secretary of the East Midlands Panel since 1996.
I was Chairman of my own site in Narborough, Leicestershire from 2000-2005.

I first had an allotment at St. Mary's Allotment Society, Aylestone Road, Leicester where I served on the Committee from 1963 until 1978. I served on the Executive Committee of the Leicester Allotment Gardeners Council from 1964 until 1977 when I moved to Broughton Astley and took my present allotment at the Western Willows site. Also in 1977 I was a founder member of the Leicestershire Allotments and Leisure Gardeners Council and became its first chairman and still hold the post. In 1981 I was a founder member of the East Midlands Regional Committee and the founder treasurer until 1988 when I became Chairman.
In 2002 I became Vice-Chairman and still hold that office. In 1984 I was awarded the Associate Life Fellowship Member of the National Society of Allotment and Leisure Gardeners in recognition of 21 years service to the Allotment movement and in June 2000 became an Honorary Life Vice-President. |

I am the elected Representative for the East Midlands Region, My area covers, Lincolnshire, Derbyshire. Leicestershire, Nottinghamshire and Northamptonshire. I am the Treasurer and Seed Secretary of the Robin Hood Allotments in Carlton, Nottingham where I live.
I have been a gardener most of my life. I worked for a major bank for 30 years and retired as a Manager in 1996. I see my role as a link between Head Office, The Management Committee, the Regional Committee and the grass root members, it will also be my duty to help where possible with any problems members may have at a local level. I intend to establish a network of contacts within the Area to enable me to obtain and pass on relevant information. To this end I will be pleased if the Secretaries of all Associations and Societies who remain members of the National Society will contact me so that I can arrange to make at least one visit to as many as possible over the next few months.
I look forward to hearing from you. |
