What is a FAQ? - A frequently asked question ....

Here are our FAQs that we will build up over time to create a valuable resource. If you have any of your own we would be delighted to receive these.

.....................................................................................................................................................................................

1. WHY SHOULD MY SOCIETY JOIN THE NSALG ? Because the NSALG campaigns for the promotion and protection of allotments and your members would benefit from free legal advice, an excellent insurance scheme, discounted seeds and a quarterly magazine which lets you know what's going on at allotment sites throughout the country. It's worth joining for the Seed Scheme alone which can save members a lot more than the annual subscriptions.

2. HOW DO I JOIN ? Get details from The Secretary, NSALG Ltd., O'Dell House, Hunters Road , Corby , Northants. , NN17 5JE tel. 01536 266576. Or contact trevor@eastmidlands-allotments.co.uk .

3. HOW MUCH DOES IT COST TO JOIN ? Members of societies pay only £1-75 pa and individual membership is available from £15 pa.

4. HOW DO I GET AN ALLOTMENT ? Contact your Local Authority and ask where the nearest allotments are. You will be allocated a plot or placed on a waiting list. Alternatively contact your Parish Council who should know where privately operated sites are (e.g. the Church). Or search the Web.

5. ARE RENTS HIGH ? There are wide regional variations and rents can vary according to facilities provided. Expect to pay from £5 to £75 or more.

6. WHO LOOKS AFTER ALLOTMENT SITES ? Normally sites are managed directly by the Local Authorities but more and more sites are becoming self-managed by elected Committees of plotholders who set and collect rents, pay water bills and so on.

7. WHAT IS A STATUTORY SITE ? This is land acquired by Local Authorities specifically for allotment use. The land cannot be sold or used for other purposes without Government approval.

8. WHAT IF THE LOCAL COUNCIL WANTS TO SELL MY ALLOTMENT SITE ? The Council will have to convince the Government that the site is surplus to requirements, that it will provide an alternative site, that it has taken cognisance of the length of the waiting list and has promoted the availability of allotment sites and has consulted the NSALG. N.B. If the site is not a Statutory Site Government consent is not needed.

9. CAN I SELL MY PRODUCE ? You may not grow produce for sale but you can sell occasional surplus produce.
