Newark Harvest News January 2004 Issue 3, Part 2

Mostly for plot holders....

Newark Allotment Society Grows

A growing number of plot holders are joining the re cently formed society. The Society is working with Newark Harvest A Newark Town Council to improve site security and facilities, to increase the number of plot holders and to improve communication between plot holders and the Town Council. Advantages of joining the Society (which is affiliated to the National Society of Allotment and Leisure Gardeners ) include low cost seeds (see below) and inexpensive insurance for sheds and greenhouses. The Society may also be able to apply for funding to pay for improvements, so let your site rep or Adrian Hobbs know what you think needs to be done

Save Money On Seeds!

Savings in the region of 50% can be made if you buy through the "Seed Scheme" as run by The National Society of Allotments and Leisure Gardeners Ltd.

We looked at 9 commonly grown vegetables (beetroot, leeks, lettuce, parsnip, tomato, peas, broad beans, runner beans A dwarf French beans).

For the Seed Scheme the total for the nine packets of seeds is under £ 6.00, but nearer £ 14 for a leading brand.

Part of the difference can be explained by fewer seeds in the packets, but a comparison based on 100 seeds still indicated great savings ( £ 8 compared with nearly £ 17). Good news which ever way you look at it!

To have access to the Seed Scheme, join Newark Allotment Society NOW!

Joy Reynolds (Vice-Chair)
