Site Improvements
Roadstone Paths
Unfortunately, the cost of installing paths was much greater than anticipated. After much debate it was agreed that since Hawton Road is the site used for education and training events the need for a road was greatest there. Roadstone was delivered to three of the other sites for distribution by plot holders and a large mound of earth and rubbish was removed
from Fleming Drive Allotments.
Marker Posts
Clients from the National Probation Service have volunteered to carve and install a marker post for each plot. Installation will begin shortly at Barnby Road Allotments.
Leaf Mould
Thanks to Newark Town Council plot holders now have a supply of leaves delivered to each site for making leaf mould.
Fencing
Volunteers will install chestnut paling fences at Hawton Road and Bowbridge Road Allotments. Many hands make light work — so if you can spare a few hours at the weekend, please contact Gerry Price on 079977 550050 for further details.
Hedge Planting
Please contact Gerry Price if you want to plant a hedge or fill gaps on your site.

Hawton Holt Conservation Area
 |
Planting the willow tunnel with Kate Richards from Living Willow Designs |
Voluntary work at the Hawton Holt Conservation Area has transformed a neglected and unused space. Thanks to Neville Davey for his generous support, time and expertise and to Nottingham University student Steve Weber who has devoted a considerable amount of time and energy to the project.
The Community Orchard
To celebrate national Apple Day on 21st October 2003 children from Barnby Road , and Bowbridge Primary Schools and pupils from the Newark Orchard School planted the first apple trees in the community orchard. The trees were paid for by the Newark & Sherwood Primary Care Trust. Nearly all of the 25 trees planted were local varieties, many of which are rarely grown. So, as well as creating a productive community orchard the trees will also help to promote regional diversity and keep some old varieties in cultivation.
Since October volunteers Neville Davey and Anni Borrill have contin ued to develop the orchard by planting cider and eating apple trees donated by Anni. A further 15 apple trees were donated by Groundworks from the Maun Valley Tree Project and planted by clients of the National Probation Service. More than 50 fruit trees have been planted in the Community Orchard and more trees will be planted in March by school children for "Plant a Pear" day. Plums and damsons will also be planted.
Thanks to all the volunteers who have given their time, and even their trees!
The Willow Holt
More than 3000 willow rods do nated by Living Willow Design have been planted to create a willow holt. The area was prepared by Community Service volunteers and the rods were planted as part of the "Working with Living Willow" course, funded by Nottinghamshire Next Stage. Participants also learnt how to use willow to build structures.
They built a willow tunnel and a bird hide which will start to grow in the Spring. The rods planted at the holt will be harvested annually and made available to holders, local groups and schools who will be able to use them to make plant supports or to plant living willow structures.
More than 40 metres of hedgerow were planted by volunteers during a hedge
