Hawton Holt Inspires Artists
Creative Harvest supports a wide range of creative activities that aim to inspire and inform par ticipants about the environment, food and healthy eating. At least one person who attended a course, and one tutor, were sufficiently inspired to take on their own allotments! Kate Koppana, Poet and Barnby Road Plot Holder, kindly wrote the evocative poem below for the project, and local artist Denise Marshall has been carving a number of signs for the conservation) area. School children from Newark have been working with visual artist Claire 5impson and poet Pat Borthwick to create a record of a year at the allotments.

Showing the way
Newark Harvest commissioned lo cal artist Denise Marshall to carve series of signs for the Conservation Area. As well as working in her studio, Denise also demonstrated carving techniques at Open Days and gave visitors the opportunity to "have a go". Newark MP Pat rick Mercer enthusiastically took up a hammer and chisel at the Lin coln Road Open Day, and pupils
'I liked the, photography, I Weedy the woody carving and I liked the courgettes as well'
- Steven (The- Mount School)
from the town's Primary Schools helped Denise at the Open Day in September and at Apple Day celebrations in October when they helped to carve the sign for the Community Orchard.
The commission was funded from Newark Town Council's contribution to Newark Harvest and the timber was donated by British Water ways and New Perspectives.

Willow, willow
bend and tie to make a holt an ancient house. In it rest while rising sap and summer green makes gentle mood in sun-filtered leaves. The autumn comes and leaves are golden brown till winter takes them up and composts fill. Here and there's a post with carven sign, green goddesses, green men abound. Plant seeds in soil and see them grow, carrots and onions, potatoes large and small. Crisp lettuces and radishes red, eat them now! Raspberries, strawberries, all Nature" s bounty with help from us. Weeds are just gatecrashers, pull them up, the bad to burn for ash, the good to compost into rich crumbly wormy food for the Land!
