Speakers for Local Meetings

I have now received 2 requests for lists of speakers for local allotment meetings.
Despite previous attempts to compile a national list at Corby Office, we do not appear to have received much response. It occurs to me therefore, that it may be more successful if we try to establish this on a regional basis.
Two sources of speakers that spring to mind are garden centres and agricultural colleges. In garden centres it is not so much the people that work in the shop as those that work in the actual nursery, i.e. in the greenhouses, sowing, pricking out and propagating, etc.
You can usually find someone in the nursery who is very knowledgeable about suitable plants for the herbaceous border not to mention small trees and shrubs. As for the agricultural colleges, there are many students covering a multitude of horticultural and agricultural subjects who would no doubt be only too pleased to talk about their given subject to a captive audience.
I spoke recently to a young man attending a local college and he thought it was a great idea, especially as it would give him valuable experience in public speaking.
There are of course many other sources of speakers not connected with gardening subjects, for example, crime prevention in the home as well as on allot ments. Contact your local police for this information.
Most people I have spoken to are prepared to give a talk for free as long as the venue is local and they will receive a free "pint and a pie" . I would be interested to hear it anyone is successful so that I can build up a panel of speakers.
