National Allotment Week – Open Day Success

The seven societies that held Open Days during National Allotment Week reported them a great success.

The basic aim was to promote allotments by allowing visitors to see what we do and how we do it behind those locked gates. It was estimated that between six and seven hundred visitors came through those unlocked gates. Many and varied stands and stalls attracted our curious guests: produce sales, tombolas, raffles, displays of old tools ( and the old tools who use them!). And for the younger elements, bouncy castles, environmental giant snakes and ladders game, a jester and the soon to be annual Washbrook duck race! All this was thoroughly enjoyed by visitors and organisers and made for a very pleasant social event. As a useful by-product, many of the societies were able to recruit new members .

One of the lessons learnt by societies doing it for the first time was that planning and organising needs to start early in the year. The other positive outcome is the satisfaction people get from being involved.

  • Open Days
  • Plan early
  • Ask members for ideas
  • GRANTS ARE AVAILABLE – OVER £500 AWARDED 2003
  • Share out the work load – don't leave everything to one person.
  • Promote the event
