Leciester Allotment Newletter Volume 1, Issue 1.

Women Rule ... It's Now Official!

The Best Kept Allotment Plot competition for the Albert Thornhill Trophy took place at the beginning of July, the judging was carried out over two days, which in retrospect must have been the wettest of the record braking sunniest summer for years! ( Well illustrated by judge Dick Camack umbrella and drenched state.)

Eight sites were visited and the standard, as usual, was very high.

The winner was Carole Johnson of West Humbersone 's Uppingham Road site. This is the first time that a lady gardener has won the City wide competition . Two other society winners were women, Glenfield Road 's Jackie Potter won their first prize whilst Marilyn Ketnor for the second year in succession won Rowley Fields competition.

So its time for the men to stop leaning on their spades!

LAGC would like to thank the judges from the Judges Guild, Dick and Joan Camack. LCC's Vince Edwards was the third brave judge .

Winner of the 2003 Albert Thornhill Memorial Trophy for the Best Allotment plot in the city. Carol Johnson with judge Dick Camack .

Radio Leicester "Get's The Plot"

This year BBC Radio Leicester adopted an allotment plot on the Meredith Road site of Rowley Fields Allotments.

Presenter Monica Winfield has been hard at work on the plot and co-ordinating both live and recorded programme from the allotments.

The stations website displayed the work achieved. Regular listeners to the station will be aware of the progress she and partner Chris have made and it will certainly have given a wonderful boost to publicising the joys of the allotment

The country's longest running gardening radio programme ‘DOWN TO EARTH' was recorded on an allotment plot.

Why not host a recording at your society?

Successful Visits to Shows

New Parks Allotment Society has for a number of years organised coach trips to places of interest to their members.

This year they visited the Malvern Spring Show in May and the in King Heath Park , Birmingham in August. They fill a 53-seater coach and include members from several other allotment societies in what is not only very interesting but a pleasant social day out.

Barry Claricoates and Kevin Raithby of the New Park Society must be congratulated on their efforts in organising these events. I am told next year's programme may be even more adventurous.

As places on these trips are at a premium and do not need to be widely publicised – stay in touch with Barry and Kev on any developing
